Nonprofit Spotlight: Latinx Community Center for Empowerment

Understanding Our Differences Logo

The Latinx Community Center for Empowerment strengthens the voice and visibility of Latinx individuals in Greater Lowell, serving as a hub for opportunity and empowerment. Its mission is to elevate the socioeconomic status of Latinx communities through pathways to education, access to social services, opportunities for civic participation, and arts and culture experiences.

What They Do

LCCE empowers Latinos in the community through programs focused on workforce development, financial education, and civic engagement, as well as community activities that promote inclusion and representation.

Understanding Our Differences in a classroom

Workforce development programs improve job prospects through high school equivalency test preparation, English classes, resume workshops, job searches, and interview training. Entrepreneurship classes provide tools to start and grow successful businesses. Meanwhile, financial literacy workshops equip participants with essential financial skills, such as budgeting, saving and credit management.

Civic engagement activities educate the community about current issues as well as their rights and duties, provide access to legal resources, and promote civic participation through voter registration and community organizing. Citizenship classes offer guidance and preparation for the naturalization process.

LCCE also organizes community events that showcase Latinx culture and talent. The annual Hispanic and Latinx Festival, for example, reflects the diversity of the community with dance, food, art, and culture.

Their Impact

Since its founding in 2019 by Executive Director Diego Leonardo, LCCE’s programs and community activities have continued to grow every year. Today, over 150 people participate in language classes, and the organization has trained over 500 teachers in the public schools in cultural awareness. With a new physical space that houses its activities, LCCE is better equipped to meet the growing needs of the community.

By expanding the availability of classes and workshops, as well as strengthening partnerships with local organizations to better understand and meet the needs of the local community, the Center looks forward to continuing to foster a thriving Latinx community.
